Young paraders lead beef industry future

IF NOMINATIONS in Chinchilla Show’s cattle section last Friday are anything to go by, things are looking up in the beef industry.

Chief cattle steward Jane Zerbst said the numbers, which were a big improvement on last year, were certainly encouraging.

“We had somewhere between 40 and 50 head of cattle, and good quality cattle,” Ms Zerbst said.

“The nominations were a massive jump up from last year and I think that is a really good sign that the industry is still strong despite the setbacks associated with the drought and the live export debacle, which was a real kick in the guts to producers.

“It’s probably the first year since I’ve been doing the job that it has been an all day job.

“We had huge numbers in the junior judges and paraders, and there was a lot of young talent on display from both Dalby and Chinchilla high schools.”

After beginning the day with the stud and breeder classes, the rest and, in fact, most of the day was given to the junior parader events where high school students were judged on their cattle handling and showing skills.

The day’s judge, David Greenup from Rosevale Santa Gertrudis Stud, was left with the difficult decision of choosing the Champion Junior Parader for the whole show, but after much consideration the winner was announced as Dalby State High School student Piper Barth.

Ms Zerbst extended her sincere thanks on behalf of the cattle section to all those who helped out on the day, adding “these things can’t go ahead without volunteers”.

Full results from the cattle section will be published in next week’s Chinchilla News.
