Whitfield probe findings set to be handed down

AFL: League boss Gillon McLachlan expects the probe into GWS Giant Lachie Whitfield to be completed "in the coming days”.

The wingman is under investigation for allegedly seeking to avoid ASADA drug testers in May 2015.

The 2012 No.1 draft pick is believed to have stayed at the house of then welfare manager Craig Lambert without notifying the club and faces a ban of up to four years if found guilty.

McLachlan said the investigation findings were almost set to be handed to ASADA, which would then made a decision on the 21-year-old.

"As I understand it, it's been an incredibly detailed, forensic investigation,” the chief executive said yesterday.

"There haven't just been simple interviews. There's been forensic orders involved, retrieval of laptops and trying to get to the bottom of it.

"These things take what they take. They work methodically through it and they don't rush to reach to an outcome.”

McLachlan said he did not have "any visibility” into investigation findings.

"I was briefed yesterday and it's now known the guys will finish that in the coming days,” he said.

GWS chief executive Dave Matthews said his club acted appropriately, making the AFL aware of the situation as soon the board found out about the allegations last July.

It is hardly the kind of controversy the Giants wanted ahead of their first ever finals campaign.

Teammates Steve Johnson and Stephen Coniglio, however, said it had been business as usual for the team and Whitfield as they prepare to play Sydney in next Saturday's qualifying final.
