Weekend to celebrate unity
BEING A Filipino- Australian in Dalby is filled with great opportunities and a welcoming sense of unity.
That's what Dalby basketball team member Jemuel Sombrero said at the 119th Philippine Independence Day, held at the Dalby PCYC on Saturday.
"There are very good opportunities for us here in Australia, it's a great place to live and we feel very welcome here,” Mr Sombrero said.
"Filipinos are very hospitable people, we're very friendly and jolly.
"The most important part of today is our unity - we're all united as one,” he said.
The weekend of celebration was organised by the Dalby Filipino- Australian Community Association Inc., and visitors from all over the Western Downs region travelled to join in the celebrations.
Secretary Agnes Cabe addressed the audience in the opening ceremony and took great pride in remembering her Filipino forefathers' fight for freedom and independence.
"June 12 is our national day of independence - it is the day our forefathers fought for their lives for the freedom we have,” Ms Cabe said.
"They made sacrifices, and they fought with courage.
"We are here today not just to play games and make friends, but to share the victory of our freedom,” she said.
The weekend was filled with basketball, volleyball and chess competitions, and boasted a range of traditional Filipino foods for guests to enjoy.
