WATCH: Wanted Aussie attempts daring hi-vis escape
A man's bright idea to evade police in Adelaide by scaling down a three-storey building in an orange hi-vis jumper has been captured on video.
Officers had been looking for the 29-year-old, wanted for a string of alleged offences including breaching his bail, driving to evade police and refusing to stop for a patrol last Monday, June 8.
He also allegedly drove a vehicle at 152km/h in a 80km/h zone that day.
They found the man just after 9am on Tuesday on the third floor of an apartment building in Hindley Street in the CBD.
SA Police had put cordons around the building and one officer waited down below as they entered the room.
"On seeing the police patrol the wanted man opened the glass sliding door to the balcony and climbed over the railing dropping down the second floor balcony below," police said in a statement today.
"The man dressed in a bright orange hi-vis top has then climbed down from the second floor balcony onto the first storey veranda roof, walked along the roof and then jumped onto the roof of a car parked in Hindley St, damaging the roof of the car.
"A waiting police officer in Hindley St has then detained the wanted man as he jumped from the roof of the car and tried to escape."
Footage of what police described as the man's "daring escape attempt" was shared on the Instagram page S**tAdelaide which has more than 287,000 followers.
"Benny Hill music would have been good," one local man wrote.
Others said if he had tried to escape from the other side of the building he would have ended up at the Adelaide Remand Centre in the block behind Hindley St.
In the video, one officer can he heard asking: "You're going to jump, are ya?"
The man replies: "Yeah."
The man, from Smithfield Plains in the city's north, was arrested and charged with driving to evade police, breaching his bail, driving disqualified, driving at a speed dangerous to the public and hindering police.
The 29-year-old face Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday and was remanded in custody, to reappear on July 14.
