Travelling family changes school lunch boxes for better

A SYDNEY family who put everything on the line to fight childhood obesity made a special visit to Toowoomba Anglican College and Preparatory School (TACAPS) this week.

The family is taking their message to more than 100,000 kids and parents around Australia and TACAPS director of community Jill Pimm insisted they stop by today and yesterday.

When parents Bel and Israel Smith heard one in four Australian kids was considered overweight or obese, they ditched their photography business, sold their apartment and loaded their two children, Indrani and Rilien, into a purpose-built motorhome to tackle the problem head-on.

TACAPS deputy head of school Gordon Oldham said the students appreciated the practical advice on healthy eating.

"We all know the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and balanced diet but the demonstrations and interactions involved in this program mean students become involved in learning the key messages, rather than simply being told what to do," he said.

The Smith family came to their new venture and purpose in life after Mr Smith was diagnosed with post-natal depression after the birth of Rilien, now 5.

Mrs Smith investigated how they could manage Mr Smith's depression naturally. Her research led her to The Institute For Integrative Nutrition where she studied to become a health coach.

During her studies and own personal research, she uncovered how food and lifestyle factors greatly improved not only Mr Smith's but their daughter, Indrani's overall health and mood.

The couple created a food education program for three to 15-year-olds and are taking it to a new town every week while home-schooling their children.
