CHINCHILLA may have a future star on it's hands, after 11-year-old Grant Dolbel impressed the Queensland Symphony Orchestra's principal percussionist David Montgomery so much he offered Grant lessons.

Mr Montgomery met Grant when the QSO visited the Maranoa region on a tour in October, and said he was struck by Grant's ability, sense of control and concentration.

"It was a little bit unusual to see that level of focus and concentration and attention to detail as well from a (then) 10-year-old,” he said.

Mr Montgomery then mentioned to Grant's parents, that if they were ever in Brisbane he'd happily give Grant lessons.

"They've been bringing him every three or four weeks, and he's totally keen, it's just amazing as a teacher to have somebody who's just so keen and attentive.”

For Grant, the highlight was being able to learn so many new skills.

"It's just really amazing and getting the opportunity to do all this stuff with all these different drums and stuff like that,” Grant said.

"I just enjoy all of it with Mr Montgomery.”

Mr Montgomery explained the three-hour lessons are also unusual.

"That's also a remarkable point, that somebody of that age can hold up under three hours of learning, and it gets pretty intense, I really put him through his paces... he's totally into it, it's great.”

For Grant's mum Amy Dolbel, it's all about Grant's love of music.

"We're just very happy that Grant's been given this opportunity, he really just loves his music and it's just been really nice to watch something that he loves so much turn into this opportunity,” Mrs Dolbel said.
