TOM Cruise has confirmed a Top Gun sequel is in the works.
The actor, in the country promoting The Mummy reboot, broke the news to Sunrise hosts Sam Armytage and David Koch this morning.
"It's true," he said.
"I'm going to start filming it probably in the next year. I know, it's happening."
The 1986 film, which followed students at the United States Navy's elite fighter weapons school as they competed to be best in the class, was a huge commercial success and won an Oscar for the song Take My Breath Away.
According to IMDB, Val Kilmer will also return as Iceman, Jerry Bruckheimer will produce and Peter Craig and Justin Marks will write the screenplay.
It is unclear if any other original cast members such as Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards or Tim Robbins will also reprise their roles.
