WELLCAMP airport is on track to top more than 80 return service flights each week with Airnorth increasing its direct services to Melbourne this week.

Three new Airnorth flights direct to the Victorian capital were launched this week, bringing the total weekly number to 12 with more to be added to North Queensland in coming weeks.

A further two weekly Airnorth services direct to Melbourne will begin from next month.

Wellcamp airport general manager Sara Hales said the increased services were in response to market demand, particularly to North Queensland which now included four weekly return services to Townsville and additional flights coming for Cairns.

"The flight schedule is changing every couple of weeks," she said.

"There are currently four return services to Townsville a week, and for Cairns we've got an extra flight starting commencing on June 5, bringing the total to four."

The flights are classed as seasonal, with Airnorth operating flights during peak demand periods.

"When it's the wet season (in North Queensland), people don't want to travel to the north as much as they do in the dry season," Ms Hales said.

"It's all about meeting the market's needs and being flexible."

The Cairns services will run to September 30, while the increased flights to Townsville will be scheduled through to late December.

The increased flights will push the number of weekly return services to more than 80, marking another milestone for the facility in less than three years.

Ms Hales said Sydney services operated by Qantas continued to be a "strong performer" for the airport on Toowoomba's western outskirts, and thanked Wellcamp airport's passengers for their support.

"Two and a half years ago we started off with 22 flights a week and now we're going to have more than 80," Ms Hales said.

"The Sydney service has been a consistent performer all the way through.

"The number one priority is to work alongside Qantas to secure more frequency in routes, to meet the needs for people to go to places when they need to get there."

Airnorth will operate 38 flights a week from Wellcamp airport from June 9 this year.
