OPINION: Calm down everyone, it's just a shark
IF THE front page of yesterday's The Daily Telegraph is any indication, the feeding frenzy over sharks on the North Coast is in full swing.
A photo of a captured tiger shark on a fishing boat covered the page, with the words "JAW KIDDING: Giant shark caught in attack zone off NSW coast but greenies want these killers protected".
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
Frankly, the play on words in the main headline isn't one of the Tele's best, and the rest is just garbage. Even by the Tele's estimate of its length at 5m (the man who claims to have caught it said it was 4-5m), the shark is large but no giant.
The Northern Star, sister paper of The Daily Examiner, had as its headline "This tiger's a little one", pointing out they can reach 7-8m.
And a killer? Like any meat eater it kills so it can consume but as this shark was caught many kilometres offshore it is unlikely to be any more guilty of taking a person's life than you or I.
As a I wrote recently, the sharks are always out there; it's only news when we see them.
The recent attacks and sightings present challenges for the North Coast, but talk of giant killers is no help to any of us.
