Although many Australians whether republican or monarchist have respected and embraced the Royal family, the point needs to be made that the same would be the case if Australia was already a Republic.

Former Brisbane Lord Mayor Clem Jones was fond of the Queen and Prince Charles and used to delight in telling stories of their encounters, although he was a staunch Republican.

The Republic of the USA is fond of and very welcoming to the Royal family.

More than half the countries competing here on the Gold Coast next year are Republics who respect the Queen as the Head of the Commonwealth of Nations.

In fact most relationships work better when each party has there own sense of space and self worth without being dependant or subservient.
