Thug jailed over AFL grand final bashing

A thug bashed a 14-year-old with a bat and stormed an AFL Grand Final party with his brother because the boy hit a "for sale" sign while playing a Harry Potter game outside.

Ryan Raymer launched the attack on the teen in a driveway at Corio in September 2019, the Victorian County Court heard on Wednesday.

It was "cowardly, largely senseless and alcohol-fuelled," Judge Gavan Meredith said in his sentencing remarks.

The boy fell to the ground and struck his head on the cement, and an unidentified man hit him in the stomach.

Raymer and his older brother Matthew then stormed the party, which was being held in a garage, with a group of 5 to 7 men armed with bats or poles.

The attack happened after the teenager and friends re-enacted a scene from Harry Potter.

The boys ran at the "for sale" sign outside a neighbour's property, one hitting it with his hip and shoulder, but they stopped after a woman told them off. The sign was not damaged.

After the attack, the injured teen was rushed to hospital and had surgery for a brain bleed and fractured skull.

Ryan Raymer admitted to intentionally causing injury, aggravated burglary and affray. He was jailed for two years and will be eligible for parole after one year.

His brother was not armed and did not injure anyone but agreed to go knowing violence was likely, Judge Meredith said.

Matthew Raymer's lawyer said his client was "embarrassed and ashamed" about his actions.

He pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary and affray, and was ordered to complete 200 hours of community work, and undergo drug, alcohol and mental health treatment.
