Kids experiencing domestic violence need your help

Charities are urging a last minute push for school supplies as children across the city prepare for Term One 2020 to start.

Domestic violence charity Friends With Dignity will this week finish up their annual back-to-school drive for kids escaping family violence.

It marks the fifth year they've run the drive, which collected 500 backpacks worth of supplies in 2019.

Founder and CEO Manuela Whitford said the new supplies would help give struggling children the safe future they're looking for.

"The thing is they leave with nothing," she said.

"So we try to make sure they stand out for the right reason. It would be odd, a child coming to a new school and having to rely on the teacher giving them stuff or finding scraps.

"It just doesn't sit good with these kids, they're really feeling isolated, so to be able to be like any other child starting the new year with a new backpack, it normalises it for a child whose life is really chaotic.

"That goes the same throughout the year as well. So we just want the child to feel they are as much a part of the class as everyone else."

The charity is collecting backpacks, pencil cases, lunch boxes and other new supplies from a number of locations across the Gold Coast until tomorrow evening.

Also accepting donations from across the Gold Coast is Westfield Helensvale, which is collecting for St Vincent de Paul.

Collection bins are outside ALDI and Kmart from Jan 13-27, seeking gift cards for school shoes, grocery vouchers for school lunches, lunch boxes, drink bottles, and various stationary supplies.
