There for locals at a time of crisis

HE’S right there to help in a time of need, Ian Peters has volunteered his time to the Rural Fire Service for over three decades.

More so, he’s lent a helping hand to the Roma community at Dargal Rd for about 17-years.

“I realised when I was young, that when you live on a property, you know how important it is to be involved in the RFS to help out in a time of need,” he said.

“It’s about giving back and helping out the local community.”

Earlier this year, Roma firefighters headed south to help St George clean up after the floods.

“Myself and another member spent two days down there helping out,” he said.

“We had so many community members coming up and telling us how appreciative they were of our help.

“That’s what it’s all about.”

Another memorable event for Mr Peter’s was the Roma floods and he said it feels honourable to help out the community at a time of crisis.

The RFS are always looking for more volunteers.

“We have about 10 active firefighters at the moment,” he said.

“We sometimes struggle to have those active members attend in the middle of the day due to their full-time work commitments, so it’s a struggle to get someone during work hours/

“After hours is OK, but it be great to have more members to have more options.”
