The wrong assumption that sunk this used-car dealer

A USED-CAR salesman from an affluent suburb has been fined $500 and lost his drivers licence for six months after he was busted driving while his licence was suspended due to being detected at more than 40km/h over the speed limit.

Hamilton resident Aaron John Leitch, 46, today pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court to the single charge of driving while on a licence suspended due to a high-speed offence.

The court heard Leitch, a salesman with Dutton Garage Wholesale at Eagle Farm, was detected by police while driving on the Pacific Motorway at Loganholme on April 24 just before 9.30am.

They began following Leitch and intercepted him near the Tanah Merah exit in relation to another matter.

A search of his licence revealed that it had been suspended on March 24 for six months in relation to the speeding offence, which was captured on camera on October 29 last year.

According to defence lawyer Andrew Wiseman, the speeding offence for which Leitch's licence was suspended was committed by a former client from the United Kingdom.

He said Leitch had written to the UK client and filed a statutory declaration with the QPS Road Safety Camera Office, but conceded that Leitch had not heard back from either the client or the RSCO, and had just assumed the material was accepted.
