The next generation of netballers gather at junior carnival

PETA Mizen has spent the past few weeks arming herself with a wealth of netball knowledge as she prepared to make her umpiring debut at the very first Chinchilla junior netball carnival last weekend.

"I've been playing since I was seven but this is my first season umpiring the sport and it's been a great experience for me,” Mizen said.

The under 12s Chinchilla team member was among 175 registered players flocking from as far as Mitchell and Warwick to join in on the courtside action.

"This is our first full-on junior netball carnival and we couldn't be more stoked with the turnout,” Chinchilla club president Renee Richards said.

"We actually had to turn some teams away because of the overwhelming numbers, but with our new courts expected to be completed by the end of this year, we're looking forward to expanding next year's carnival to accommodate for an even bigger crowd.

"We wanted to host a carnival to give our girls a chance to experience what playing at a slightly higher level is like, without having to travel away from the region.

"This also allowed our junior umpires to gain some more experience and confidence because when it comes to netball not everyone is going to be able to become a Firebird, there are many avenues players can work towards.”

The three different age divisions allowed under 8s, 10s and 12s from Miles, Jandowae, Chinchilla, Dalby and Mitchell to challenge themselves and play against some more experienced netballers from Toowoomba and Highfields, with the latter team taking out the under 12s final against Warwick at the end of the day.

Highfields coach Graeme Thomas said he was impressed with Chinchilla's organisation and the number of teams involved.

"It's been a wonderful carnival and we are looking forward to coming back next year,” he said.
