FOOTBALL: The Chinchilla Honeybears are not wasting a single moment of 2019, getting their pre-season training underway this week.

Coach Tim Taylor said he was impressed with the turn out at Tuesday's evening session.

"We currently have 16 ladies ready to play for the Honeybears this season which is incredible,” Taylor said.

"It's almost enough to have two teams play in the division, but not quite,” he joked.

After quite a challenging 2018 season, Chinchilla's senior ladies football team managed to turn the tables and ended up qualifying for the finals.

Unfortunately the Honeybears lost the semi-final round 1-0 to Dalby.

But 2019 is a new year bringing with it new challenges, some fresh faces as well as some older senior players who have returned after taking one year off.

Last year the majority of the team was under 20, with many juniors stepping up to play in the senior division for the first time.

"It's a program I implemented about three years ago when I first got here and started coaching the ladies team,” Taylor said.

"We hand-picked some of the junior female players and once a month they joined us at senior training.

"So when they were old enough to make that step up to the seniors division they knew what was coming, because it is a big step up from juniors to seniors.”

With a year of training and playing under their belts, the more junior players now have the experience and confidence that will give them an edge over this year's competition.

Taylor said senior ladies training sessions will be held every Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6pm.

It isn't too late for newcomers to sign up either, the Honeybears will be taking sign ons until June depending on numbers.

The first match of the season will be held on the first weekend in March.
