The smell of burnt rubber and brake fluid drifted from Ironbark Raceway on Saturday, as a range of cars and bikes screeched down the 1/8 mile in a series of test runs before November's state competition.

Competitors were encouraged to enter in the series of fun runs, where the vehicles faced off against challengers usually found in separate model brackets, to fine-tune their starts and burnouts.

This meet comes after Roma locals left their opponents in the dirt at the second round of the Queensland Drag Racing Championships held in Gladstone last weekend, with Paul Winkel and Randall Mohr winning their brackets for the 1/8 mile dash.

The Queensland Drag Racing Championship is to conclude on November 4, with the final event of the three-race series to be held at Ironbark Raceway.

South West Drag Racing Association vice-president and veteran racer Paul Winkel says the club is excited to host the event on home ground.

"It's a bit of a big deal that the state championships is heading to Roma for its final round,” Winkel said.

"We are looking forward to it, we are hoping to get around 120 racers at the event.

"We are pretty lucky too, points are close between the top drivers, which will ensure they will make the trip out.”

If November is too long to wait, the local drag track championships will be held on October 25 at the raceway.
