Teen, 17, sentenced for relationship with 15-year-old girl

A 17-YEAR-OLD man who was in a relationship with a 15-year-old has received a suspended jail sentence for indecent treatment of a child.

The Toowoomba man, who is now aged 19 and cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to indecently dealing with a child under 16 on three occasions in March 2014.

At Brisbane District Court on Friday he was sentenced to jail for a total of six months, suspended immediately.

Judge Kerry O'Brien said the man and the girl were in a "so-called romantic relationship" when the offences occurred.

He said he took into account the man's youth, relationship with the victim and proximity of their ages when sentencing him.

The court heard the man had been held in custody for 82 days for other unrelated offences.

When recording a conviction for the indecent treatment charges, Judge O'Brien also noted that they were domestic violence offences.

This recording process was introduced last year when new domestic violence legislation was passed.
