Teacher jailed for sexy Snapchat with teenage girl

A FORMER Toowoomba school teacher who sent sexual images to a teenager via social media site Snapchat has been jailed.

Michael Joseph Dinan Munn couldn't explain why he had done it, his barrister David Jones told Toowoomba District Court.

His client had been in a "dark place" at the time with a failing marriage but as a result of his offending the 36-year-old had lost his job and his wife, he said.

Though he had originally blocked the girl's request, Munn and the 15-year-old girl, a student at the school he taught at, had eventually linked via Snapchat and had engaged in conversation on one afternoon, Crown prosecutor Elizabeth Kelso told the court.

After the conversation had become sexual, the teacher had sent the girl an image of a man holding his penis, followed by a close-up shot of a penis before sending her a three-second video of a man masturbating, Ms Kelso said.

The teenager had then blocked him and removed the Snapchat trail before telling a friend the next day and then her mother who approached Munn about the incidents, the court heard.

Munn had apologised to the girl's mother.

He pleaded guilty to three counts of indecent treatment of a child under 16.

Ms Kelso told the court she had spoken to the girl's parents who didn't want to provide a victim impact statement but just wanted the matter at an end.

Mr Jones said his client had no criminal history at all, had a very good work record and through four references tended to the court people spoke well of him.

Munn was now working two jobs and was in a new relationship and expecting his first child in April, Mr Jones said.

Judge Catherine Muir told Munn his was a "gross breach of trust".

"As you know, there is no excuse for your behaviour," she told him

Telling him the maximum penalty for such offending was 14 years in jail, Judge Muir sentenced Munn to 12 months in jail but ordered the term be suspended after he had served two months with the balance of the sentence to having over his head for two years.
