Taroom Wandoan Battlers fight for Lindsay Williams Shield

Rugby League: The Taroom Wandoan Battlers have tested their skills and come out strong at the Lindsay Williams Shield.

The first outing of the year, the competition featured the Battlers, Tara Panthers, Roma Cities, and Jandowae Fishhooks with fresh 2019 sides vying for top spot. In their first match the Battlers were the comfortable winners at 32-0 against the Panthers, leaving Cities to clash with the Fishhooks in match two.

Wandoan Sport and Recreation Association president Tony Baker said it was a very entertaining game, with the Fishhooks winning 28-12.

In the hard-fought final it was the Fishhooks who came out victors 30-6 against the Battlers.

Baker said despite the loss the Battlers performed very well on the day.

"They've got a number of new faces in their line up this year, so we're quite positive about the season ahead,” Baker said.

He made special mention of captain Luke Brosnan who "led them around the park very well”, and Kaleb Davies who scored a hat trick of tries.

The day was well supported, with a few hundred people in attendance, while the Battlers' jersey auction alone raised about $5,500 to go towards building dressing rooms on the oval.

In it's 10th year the Shield pays homage to Lindsay Williams, who died suddenly in 2006.

Remembered as a "terrific sportsman” Baker said Lindsay Williams had played football in Wandoan, represented Queensland Country, captained Toowoomba Valleys, and played for Toowoomba Valleys. The next preseason match is the Terry Charles Memorial Club, while the official season kicks off mid-April.
