Swans name Kennedy as skipper for 2017

AFL: Sydney has bucked its own trend by naming one skipper for the 2017 season.

Star midfielder Josh Kennedy has been handed the Swans' reins, taking over from Kieren Jack and Jarrad McVeigh.

The announcement came as Jack Ziebell took over from Andrew Swallow at North Melbourne and follows the ascension of Tom Lynch and Steve May to the joint-captaincy at the Gold Coast Suns after Gary Ablett stepped down.

The Swans began sharing official leadership duties in 2005, when installing Barry Hall, Brett Kirk and Leo Barry as co-skippers.

Jack and McVeigh were in charge together since 2013, but coach John Longmire revealed the Swans wanted to head in a different direction.

"The idea of having one captain grew on Macca (McVeigh), Kizz (Jack) and I during the off-season. It just feels right for this playing group,” he said.

"Macca and Kizza have both been fantastic, completely selfless and have backed Joey (Kennedy) completely to take over the reins.

"Joey's CV is incredible and we can't think of anyone else more prepared and adept for the job.”

Kennedy joins his famous grandfather, John Kennedy snr, as a club captain, though it will still irk Hawthorn supporters Josh is not around to help lead the brown and gold.

Kennedy snr captained the Hawks between 1955-59, before going on to coach them to three flags (1961, 1971, 1976).

Josh Kennedy spent three years with the Hawks before greater opportunity lured him north to Sydney in 2009.

"My leadership will always evolve. My consistency and desire for success, I think, will be the cornerstone of my captaincy,” he said.

At Arden St, it was only a matter of time before Ziebell, now 25, was handed North's captaincy. He was earmarked for the role since joining the club due to his fearless approach often compared to Lions great Michael Voss.
