Shark attack leaves surfer Craig Ison in critical condition

EVANS Head resident Craig Ison remained in a critical condition at Gold Coast University Hospital last night after being mauled by a suspected Great White Shark at Evans Head on Friday.

The attack was compared to that on triple world surfing champion Mick Fanning, who created global headlines when he fought off a suspected great white shark during a contest at Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, last month.

Mr Ison, a former boxer, was likened to Fanning, who famously declared he punched the shark in the back to fight it off.

After surgery at Lismore Base Hospital on Friday, Mr Ison was flown to the Gold Coast on Saturday for further surgery.

Mr Ison's partner, Jenny Brown, told media outside Lismore Base Hospital he would paddle back out into the waves again after he recovered.

"He's tough, he'll be all right," Ms Brown said. "He lives for it, so I think he'll go back out," he said.

On Saturday morning, two great whites within 50 metres of a lone surfer at Evans Head were captured on drone footage.

When warned of the sharks' presence, the surfer remained in the water.

Beaches at Evans Head remained closed for 48 hours following Friday's attack.

Police and surf lifesavers declared the area safe on Sunday morning and beaches from Shark Bay to Chinaman's Beach were reopened.

Shark sightings in the Ballina and Lennox Head areas forced the closure of beaches in the Ballina Shire yesterday.

The situation would be reassessed this morning.
