Students prepare to light up the sky with musical 'Fame'

YOU'RE bound to remember her name after you see Chinchilla State High School's production of Fame! JR this month on the cultural centre stage.

Senior student Ellie Richards has been busy rehearsing, alongside 50 other state high school students from Years 7-12, as preparation for the production enters its final week before it premieres next Friday, August 23.

"The whole process of putting this musical together has been such a rewarding experience,” Ellie said.

"Even though we have students from a wide range of ages, we've formed this really tight-knit bond, we're like one big production family now which has been really special to be a part of.”

The talented state high school captain has been cast as Carmen, a confident dance student determined to become a star who has a number of big songs throughout the musical.

This isn't Richards first time taking to the stage, she's played major parts in both Beauty and the Beast (2015) and high school's production of The Addams Family in 2017.

For year nine student, Zach Gerke, who has been cast as serious classical actor Nick, this year's musical will be his first time performing a lead role.

"My family was so excited when I told them I'd landed a part. My sister was a lead in Mary Poppins several years ago and had the best time so it was definitely something I wanted to get involved with,” he said.

Producer and musical director Mrs Helen Hubbard said they've been rehearsing seriously since term two after auditions were held back in term one.

"The students have given us nothing but 100 per cent effort and enthusiasm through the whole process,” she said.

"As we get closer to production, the rehearsals start to get much more intense and demanding but we've been really proud of how the students have handled the commitment.”

Fame! Jr is set in New York City's celebrated High School for the Performing Arts and follows the inspiring story of a diverse group of students working towards achieving their dream of "hitting the heights” and putting their "name in lights” to become famous performers.

With insight and humour, the show explores issues that confront many young people today, including prejudice, identity, self-worth and perseverance.

Director and choreographer Miss Asha Josland said when it came to selecting a musical for their biennial school production, Fame! Jr was an easy choice.

"It's such a feel good musical with songs people know and love and we also knew the plot line was something our students would connect with,” she said.

Tickets are already selling fast so don't miss out on your chance to see the high school's hard work with two evening performances to choose from.

Performances are taking place on August 23 and 24 from 7pm.

Student tickets are $10 and adults are $15 and can be purchased from the high school office on weekdays from 8.30am-3.30pm.
