Storm could rest skipper after brutal Origin

THE Melbourne Storm is contemplating resting skipper Cameron Smith from Friday night's clash with the bottom-placed Newcastle Knights.

Smith, Cooper Cronk and Will Chambers all returned to Melbourne on Thursday after Queensland's horror series-opening Origin loss to NSW at Suncorp Stadium.

Storm coach Craig Bellamy said he was contemplating giving the 33-year-old hooker the night off in preparation for next Thursday's clash against defending premier Cronulla.

"Most of the say will come down to the players. With Smithy and Cooper and the amount of Origin they've played, they know better than anybody else," Bellamy said.

"Cameron's probably pulled up the worst of the three of them to be honest so we'll just see how he feels in the morning but he's feeling tired and he's looking tired."

Chambers will play against the Knights at AAMI Park after he escaped a ban despite being charged with a grade-one careless high tackle over the hit that left Blues star Mitchell Pearce concussed in Brisbane.

As it was the third indiscretion from Chambers this season it was originally deemed he was ineligible for a fine and would face suspension.

However, the Storm argued that the code's wording meant the ruling should only be implemented after a third conviction had been recorded. Chambers has only been found guilty twice so far this season.

The Queenslander will instead pay a $1550 fine. The code, meanwhile, will be "updated to clarify this area".

Melbourne will be boosted by the return of prop Jesse Bromwich, back from a two-game ban for his off-field indiscretion after the Anzac Test.

"It's great to have Jesse back," Bellamy said. "While the guys did a good job filling in for him, we certainly missed him and I'm sure he will be really keen to get back in and get stuck in."
