Silver lining for Tallent at world championships

AUSTRALIA has won its second medal at the world athletics championships in Beijing, with race walker Jared Tallent claiming silver in the 50km walk.

The 30-year-old improved on the two bronze medals he won at the previous world titles in 2011 and 2013, finishing 45 seconds behind Slovakia's Matej Toth.

"I'm stoked. To come back to the Bird's Nest and walk away with another silver is pretty good," he said. "It's not the gold that I wanted, but I'm proud of the result that I have."

Australia's other medallist was Fabrice Lapierre, who took silver in the long jump.

Other highlights on day eight included a 4x100m relay double to Jamaica, with Usain Bolt anchoring the men's team to victory and Shelley-Ann Fraser-Pryce the women's team.
