Shark sighting closes Ballina beaches

UPDATE: POLICE have said that at about 9.30am this morning a large shark was spotted swimming about 50 meters off Angels beach.

As a result of this and other sightings, from 11am today, Angel's beach, Shelly beach, Lighthouse beach and Angel's Flat Rock have been closed for a period of 24 hours.

It is believed the presence of baitfish has attracted large sharks to the area.

Police are continuing to work with Surf Life Saving Australia, and local council officials to monitor the situation.

INITIAL REPORT: BALLINA beaches are closed after a large shark was spotted this morning.

Surf Life Saving NSW posted on their website that a large shark was spotted just offshore this morning at Ballina near a group of surfers.

"NSW Police and Surf Life Saving have closed beaches in the area for the next 24 hours and are urging people to stay out of the water," the website said.

Ballina SLSC members helped police clear the water and erected beach closed signs.

The Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter is conducting aerial patrols along with volunteers aboard the Ballina Jet Rescue Boat and an Inflatable Rescue Boat from the surf club.

The following beaches are closed until further notice: Sharpes Beach, Angels Beach, Shelly Beach and Lighthouse Beach.
