RECIPE: A Saucy Father’s Day gift

IT'S time to spoil dads everywhere!

I've always believed it's better to make a gift than buy something shiny and expensive; that way dad knows you've put some thought (and love) into his present.

This recipe is for a very easy barbecue sauce. It goes well with pork or chicken, so is the perfect accompaniment for spare ribs or barbecue wings.

If you're an older kid or have a grown-up to help, seal the sauce into sterilised screw-top or clip-lock jars; that way the sauce will last for six months if unopened. Refrigerate the jars after opening.

Easy chilli barbecue sauce

Makes 2 cups


 1 x 410g can tomato puree  

 100ml water  

 2 tbs tomato paste  

 2 tbs celery seeds  

  ½ cup malt vinegar  

 1 cup lightly packed brown sugar  

 2 tbs Worcestershire sauce 

 dried chilli flakes, to taste.


Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to the boil over high heat, stirring constantly. If your dad likes spicy food, use about a teaspoon of chilli; if he doesn't, try just a quarter or a half a teaspoon. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sauce is thick and aromatic. Seal in sterilised jars or store in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Refrigerate jars after opening.

Easy way to sterilise jars: Preheat oven to 100C. Place clean, washed screw-top or preserving jars in the oven on an oven tray for ease of handling. Heat jars at 100C for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, place lids in a bowl and cover with boiling water. Pour hot sauce carefully into jars and seal while still hot.
