Sam Thaiday 'virginity' comment cops blast

MAROONS player Sam Thaiday soured a hard-fought Origin clash with a lewd and tasteless victory speech screened across Australia and New Zealand, in which he described his side's win as: "Like losing your virginity - it wasn't nice but we got the job done."

His bizarre summation to Nine's Brad Fittler came only moments after Queensland scored a 6-4 victory and was broadcast live to millions and quickly drew widespread condemnation.

NSW Family First spokesman Phil Jobe led the outrage, describing the veteran Broncos forward's comments, as "wild and crude".

"I'm shocked that Mr Thaiday would bring sex into the discussion over a game of rugby league, especially because he is a family man," he said.

"I think his choice of words were not only offensive but in bad taste. To call them wild and crude is not overstating the point."

Social media quickly went into overdrive, with Liz d'Arbon summing up the situation saying: "Perhaps for the locker room chit chat - not for the big microphone and TV."

Another told Thaiday online: "You're talking to kids as well."

The unfortunate comments were in stark contrast to those of star No. 6 Johnathan Thurston, who used his post-match speech to make a shout-out to the troubled community of Aurukun.

It followed another night in which both men's side again broke records and hearts on NSW soil.

For while the Blues had won six of eight series openers here at Sydney Olympic Park, it was Queensland who bashed their way to a 6-4 win with Maroons skipper Cameron Smith becoming the most capped Origin player in the process.
