Mudlo Rocks can be risky this Easter

IF YOU'RE planning on heading to Double Island Point for your Easter getaway be sure to check the beach driving conditions before heading off.

While some sand has returned to the beach since Cyclone Winston impacted the region earlier this month, on Friday a four-wheel-drive died a slow death when it got stuck on exposed Mudlo Rocks and was unable to be recovered.

The sad fate of the vehicle is the latest proof of the ever-changing conditions around the rocks, which are notorious for bringing drivers undone and providing entertainment for locals who know better.

Rainbow Beach Adventure 4WD Hire co-owner Jessica Haring said it is not worth risking passing the rocks if you are unsure.

"People take unnecessary risks and they become public folly," she said.

Ms Haring said she warns visitors to the area about following people past the rocks or taking advice they may get them into trouble.

"Beach conditions changed on a daily basis," she said.

"Mudlo Rocks should always be approached with caution.

"The rule is regardless of how it looks, even at dead low, it can be treacherous."

To find out whether the rocks are passable each day, you can check the Rock Report Rainbow Beach Facebook page. The page has close to 20,000 followers and allows people to contribute and to provide updated beach conditions.
