Robbery horror as man with large knife holds women hostage

Dramatic footage of an armed robbery of a discount store south of Brisbane shows a large knife falling out of the pants of a man and three women with their hands bound by cable ties.

A small storage room at the back of the store is where police will allege two women were tied and forced to sit while a knife-wielding robber raided the shop in Beenleigh on Monday.

Staff at Overflow, a discount warehouse, are still reeling after their ordeal in which they were allegedly taken into a small storeroom at the back of the shop and tied with cable ties from the store's shelves.

Owner Minesh Parmar told of the traumatic robbery and said he sent his staff home today to try to recover.

Dramatic video footage shows a man walking into the store's office, where there are three female staff tied up in a small store room at the back.

The video shows the man talking and then exiting the office and closing the door. He falls over on to the floor when he re-enters the room, shoving the door with his shoulder.

Three women, all with their hands bound, are then led out of the storeroom.

Two junior staff members are tied together.

The man is seen at the office manager's desk, kicking under the table.

At one stage, a large knife falls out of his jeans.

Police will allege the manager was forced to unlock the store's safe. Two female shop assistants were tied together using cable ties and cloth and pushed into a small storeroom during the traumatic raid on the shop.

The two fearful women allegedly waited while the knifeman raided the store's safe, believed to have held about $2000.

Their phones were stolen during the ordeal but have since been recovered at a property at Slacks Creek.

Mr Parmar sent staff home today and brought in new staff to go through hours of CCTV footage from the store's 16 cameras.

He said a man entered the store from George St, wandered around for about 20 minutes going to the party aisle, before heading to another aisle to pick up some large black cable ties.

He then took the two shop assistants through the shop's office and to a small storage room out the back and tied them using the cable ties

Mr Parmar said the staff involved were given the day off so they didn't have to be involved or ever see the footage.

"I've sent my three staff members home," Mr Parmar said.

"They are trying to get over it.

"It was the way it happened especially with the zip ties - it was terrifying.

"I'm not worried about the money.

"I want my staff to go home, to get over this. Hayly is more like family to me … it's sad."

He said following the incident he was looking at putting a panic button into the store and increasing security by closing one entrance on George St after 4pm.

Beenleigh man Alan John Jones, 30, was charged with nine offences including three counts of deprivation of liberty, two counts each of stealing and common assault, and one count each of armed robbery and enter a premises to commit indictable offence.

The popular store opened a year ago on Beenleigh's George Street, replacing Sam's Warehouse.

Mr Parmar originally owned the store at Palmdale which has shut and also has an interest in the Overflow store at Browns Plains.
