River Rats lose out in grand final

Rugby Union: The River Rats' season has come to an end after a tough grand final loss against the Dalby Wheatmen.

The match was held at the Toowoomba sports grounds on Saturday, with the two teams going head to head for the ultimate victory.

Chinchilla River Rats president Neal Stevenson said the Dalby side took an early lead with their high energy.

"The first half we were out-enthused by Dalby and they stripped away to an early lead in the first half,” Stevenson said.

"In the first half we were playing into a pretty strong breeze, which did cause quite a few unforced errors.”

Despite a late try in the closing minutes of the first half, the teams entered the break with Dalby Wheatmen leading 15-5.

But Stevenson said the Rats quickly took charge in the second half.

"We got going again,” he said.

"We got a penalty goal and then a converted try.

"We did level it up to 15-all but late in the game a penalty was awarded to Dalby and they converted, so we went down 18-15.

"Although the result on Saturday was disappointing, I'm still very proud of what we achieved this year - we were minor premiers for the second time in the club's history.”
