River Rats girls rugby 7s team wrap up debut season
THE Chinchilla River Rats Under-15 girls' rugby 7s team was narrowly pipped at the post by the Toowoomba Bears in last Sunday's grand final .
Despite winning their two qualifying games earlier in the day and finishing the Bears game on a neat 7-7, the team unfortunately missed out on championship glory when it came down to the season's points system.
To cap off the end to a successful debut season. River Rats Dana Hart, Chloe Ellem, Seraphina Dickman, Kate Ellem, Meg McKeller and Cobi Zerbst have all been selected to play in the Darling Downs under-15s rugby 7s team.
The young team blew coach Lindsay Ashby away with the speed at which they managed to grasp to rules and concept of the game.
"It was the teams first season of rugby 7s and the girls have exceeded all expectations and have improved every week as a team,” he said.
"Its been a lot of hard work but I couldn't be any prouder of how these girls have developed not only their skill sets to play 7s rugby but their sportsmanship and respect they have for the opposition each week.
"To finish the season a very close second on the ladder heading into the final round is simply an outstanding result and having beaten every other side is a great reward for the hard work each girl has put into training every week.”
Ashby added he was impressed with the commitment shown by the families as well, with some parents travelling from Miles and Dalby to participate in training and games.
"I would like to thank the parents for their support, which included many early starts,” he said.
Ashby mentioned he was already planning to coach the girls' team next season with River Rats intending to enter both an under-15s and an under-17s team in next year's competition.
"I am rapt with the girls' game play and how far they've come this season, to be runners-up in their first ever competition is a credit to them really,” he said.
"Their dedication at training and games was brilliant, you couldn't ask for more. They will definitely be a force to contend with next year.”
