Hit and run: rider's 'helmet had flown off upon impact'

A MOPED rider has suffered serious injuries following a hit and run traffic crash at Diddellibah last night.

Police said the moped was struck by a Mazda utility on David Low Way at around 8pm.

A witness told The Daily the ute was allegedly travelling at excessive speeds.

"[It caused] the moped to go sliding and crashing into the bushes, smoke was everywhere.

"The motorist's helmet had flown off upon impact and the moped was completely unrecognisable with parts scattered everywhere."

The witness said Triple 0 (000) was called immediately as the ute allegedly "continued to speed off without stopping".

It will be alleged that the ute then left the scene at speed along Petrie Creek Road.

Police located the alleged driver of the ute a short time later in Petire Creek.

He was arrested and the 21-year-old Bli Bli man charged with with one count each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing grievous bodily harm whilst adversely affected by an intoxicating substance, drive under the influence of liquor and fail to remain at incident and assist injured persons showing callous disregard.

He is due to appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on June 5.

The 26-year-old Toowoomba man was taken to hospital following the crash.
