Retired-life never looked so busy

RAY Howson was persuaded by a friend to become a volunteer for Roma’s Meals on Wheels on the basis that it would only require an hour a month of his time.

Three years later, he is now president of the organisation, overseeing 60 volunteers who provide a valuable service to 17 Roma residents three times a week.

“We’re here as a group to serve and provide older residents with a nutritious meal,” he said.

“We have the capacity to provide this service for a lot more people who require it though.

“I know that there’s people in town who should be using our service – whether it’s their pride or stubbornness.

“There’s a barrier to break down, and we just keep plugging away.”

Mr Howson came to town as a Variety Manager for Woolworths in 1990 and celebrated 30-years as a local last week.

“What you notice in these small towns is that the community is very welcoming – I enjoy being involved in these organisations,” he said.

The retiree stretches his free time among other organisations in town.

He is Vice President of Visit Roma, a group he’s been involved in for the last six years.

He’s also involved in Roma Historical Precincts Inc and is currently focused on the old Butter Factory on Station St.

“It was built in the 1930s and it produced butter until the 1960s,” he said.

“We want to make a celebration of the dairy industry in our area.

“It has so much history that we should be sharing it with the wider community.”
