Reflect on family ties

THERE'S a unique new exhibition coming to Lapunyah Art Gallery with the unlikeliest of subject matters - plumbing.

Pipe Dreams, a soft-sculpture exhibition, was created by artist Erica Gray and was inspired by her childhood in a family of plumbers.

"My dad was a plumber and then my brothers all went into the trade and actually mum and dad asked me if I wanted to be a plumber as well, and I said 'no thank you', much prefer the girlier pursuits,” Ms Gray laughed.

"But I really wanted to just make works that were quite reflective of really great happy times in my childhood.”

The soft side to the exhibition came from Ms Gray's days after leaving school and going into sewing.

"On the verge of leaving home, turning into a young adult and first job and all of that sort of growing and evolving, so I tried to tie in a lot of poignant things in my life with the taps,” she said.

"We used to just throw components around in the backyard, like plumbing pipes and all that sort of stuff and... we'd make tents with all the plumbing bits and drape fabric over them, we made a big mess in the backyard.”

Ms Gray said she hopes the exhibition will leave viewers full of positivity.

"It's fun, it's meant to be, you're meant to look at it and for what it is, hopefully feel positive and happy when you see them, and I guess that's the emotion I feel when I made them and I hoped that would emit from the work, just a real positive vibe and happy memories and all good things like that,” she said.

"Pop art to me is very much about bold colour and that quick reaction, the first thoughts that come to your head in the background in that, the joy, or the happy, or the silly, even the random kind of thoughts. To me art is very much about that expressing and hopefully capturing and hopefully being able to display that so other people can see that in the work as well.”
