Rapper slams football players for dressing up in blackface

A VICTORIAN football and netball club says there was nothing racist about a party where multiple players came dressed in blackface, despite the fact the use of blackface has drawn controversy dozens of times in the past few years for being racist.

The Frankston Bombers club posted photos on Instagram over the weekend that showed at least four players dressed in blackface.

Club president Chris Sharman told the Herald Sun there was nothing racist about the party and that players had been dressing up as their favourite musicians for an "ipod shuffle night".

But the practise of blackface has long been identified as offensive because people use it to act out offensive stereotypes, especially during the 19th and 20th centuries.

The photos were condemned by Indigenous rapper Briggs after he shared them on his social media networks.

The Frankston Bombers deleted the photos from the club's Instagram account.

It also deleted its Twitter account after first defensively responding to people questioning why players had been allowed to wear blackface.

The club reportedly suggested the use of blackface was a 'tribute' to the musicians the players had dressed as.

Hundreds of people responded to the post on Briggs' Facebook page, including many who attacked the rapper for criticising the club.

Many also showed their support for him and called for the club to apologise.

Melbourne author Danielle Binks used Twitter to call for the club to work with organisations such as It Stops With Me.
