Premier League allegiances revealed in Twitter map

YOU don't have to be in England to be a fan of an English Premier League  team, and Twitter has the map to prove it.

The social media platform has launched its Premier League follower map, created by looking at the official Twitter accounts for each team, using their followers as an indicator of allegiance.

In Australia, it's Liverpool which reigns supreme, arsenal take second spot with Manchester United rounding out the top three.

Liverpool's dominance in Australia wouldn't come as much of a surprise to anyone who witnessed 95,000 people packing the MCG to watch The Reds take on Melbourne Victory in 2013.

Whilst many theories exist just as to why Liverpool are so popular here, the influence of two of Australia's favourite footballing sons - Craig Johnston and Harry Kewell would certainly have played a part.

Liverpool's success in the 70's and 80's also matches up nicely with our first World Cup qualification and a rise in popularity for the round ball game.
