Police spat at, teenager assaulted in separate incidents

POLICE have dubbed New Year's Eve a "disappointing and disgusting display of poor public behaviour" with more than 20 separate incidents recorded across the three days in the Western Downs town of Chinchilla.

At 1.30am on New Year's Day police allege a 19-year-old Inglewood man started a fight with a 17-year-old Chinchilla man, who was knocked to the ground and hit his head.

A police spokesman said the police were particularly concerned with the violent, unprovoked nature of the attack.

Police further allege the same offender hit the victim's friend, and also smashed the window of Jack and Jill's Hair Salon on Heeney St.

The Inglewood man was arrested and charged with one count of common assault, one count of assault occasioning bodily harm, and one count of wilful damage. He was bailed to appear in Chinchilla Magistrates Court on January 31.

"We're disappointed with the behaviour of many persons who had obviously consumed too much liquor and simply couldn't handle it," the spokesman said.

In a separate incident, police were called to a disturbance at a Pilkington St address shortly after 10.30pm on New Year's Eve.

Police allege a 23-year-old Gold Coast woman was verbally abusive towards them, and after being warned, lashed out at police.

She was arrested and charged with serious assault, police obstruction and assault on police.

The woman then allegedly turned to the constable and spat in his face.

Chinchilla police officer in charge Andrew Irvine said it was "disgusting" behaviour.

"We're not paid to be target practice," he said.

"It's disgusting."
