Passionate for all things tourism

PASSIONATE about all things tourism for local legend Charlie Eames.

Since moving to Roma five years ago, the southwest tourism advocate has volunteered his time in a range of groups as a way to socialise and network.

With a background in local government, tourism and business, Mr Eames wanted to use his previous experience to add value to groups that would better the community.

"I wanted to be involved in organisations that made a difference to the whole community," Mr Eames said.

Mr Eames hosts Roma Central Motel, is President of Visit Roma and is on the committee for Easter in the Country and Commerce Roma.

"EITC, Commerce Roma and Visit Roma do make a significant contribution to the whole community, not just economically but improves social wellbeing of the community," he said.

Ever since he was a teenager, Mr Eames has found time to volunteer.

"Initially I was involved in various sporting groups, then with my own children's activities and sports," he said.

"I was a volunteer surf lifesaver, which from beach patrols saw me get more involved with behind the scenes and eventually took on Presidency of major Surf Lifesaving Clubs on the Sunshine Coast."

He said besides making a difference in the community, volunteering can make a difference to yourself - helping others, your self esteem, making new friends and networking.

"It's great to see accomplishments come to fruition," he said.

"The enjoyment and success of an EITC festival, helping the business community through tough times like with COVID-19.

"And seeing the success of your organisations ideas and concepts like Visit Roma getting council to take over the operations of the Big Rig tourist attraction, in which the number of visitors have increased by 40 per cent in two years."
