PARENTS are being urged to prepare Schoolies for the potential for anything to happen in wake of the Paris terrorism attacks.

Federal Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said parents should talk to their teenage children before they left home about what they should do if the unthinkable should happen.

"Make sure that your kids have the appropriate information and are as prepared for any incident when they're going to schoolies as is humanly possible," he said.

Queensland Police Service have increased their numbers, including the heavily-armed Special Emergency Response Team which has been placed on standby on the Gold Coast.

Gold Coast Chief Superintendant Terry Borland said the Schoolies plan now included more specialist police.

About 25,000 schoolies are expected to converge on the Gold Coast for a week-long program which kicks off on Saturday.

On the Sunshine Coast, police have warned school leavers against the illegal consumption of alcohol, drink-driving, and anti-social behaviour.

Adults are also being warned they face fines of up to $8800 for supplying liquor to an underage person.

Young caught drinking face fines of up to $247.

The warning comes as hundreds of school leavers celebrated the completion of Year 12 with a dip at Sunshine Coast beaches.

Lifesavers have been keeping a close watch on school leavers and are urging them not to swim at night, on unpatrolled beaches and under the influence of alcohol.
