Our young farmers show how it’s done
NOW they've conquered the Ekka, a team of young farmers representing the region has its eyes on even higher glory.
Chinchilla took out this year's Young Farmers' Challenge in front of a huge crowd last Saturday night.
The team - Bob Walsh, Samara Hoffman, Melinda Cann and Leon Polzin - blitzed the field, winning the event in under five minutes.
"It was a bit of a shock really," Mr Walsh said.
The crowd at the Ekka Main Arena last Saturday night was believed to have been more than 30,000.
"I was really nervous beforehand but it felt great to win," Mr Walsh said.
The challenge was a team relay event featuring eight teams from across the state.
Some of the tasks included cracking a whip, driving a tractor, chopping wood and lassoing a cow.
The Chinchilla team will now represent Queensland at a national event in Adelaide late next year.
For Mr Walsh, a farm hand at a Chinchilla property, it's all been a dream come true.
"We went down to the bar and some of the people you meet are just fantastic," the 24-year-old said.
Watching the event last Saturday night was Chinchilla Show Society president Greg Stanke who said he was "very proud" of the achievement.
