Opposition leader questions Premier over COVID-19 pub blitz

OPPOSITION Leader Deb Frecklington has questioned the Queensland Premier asking why is there stricter enforcement in outback pubs than in city nightclubs?

"Annastacia Palaszczuk needs to explain why outback pubs have been fined for people playing pool but it seems anything goes at protests or nightclubs," Ms Frecklington said.

This follows after four southwest pubs were hit with $6672 fines for breaching COVID-19 public health directions.

Samantha Senescall, owner of The Federal Hotel at Wallumbilla, east of Roma, says the pub, which was already struggling because of the coronavirus shutdown, might be forced into bankruptcy if she has to pay the $6672 fine.

"We truly may lose the only pub in town due to this," Ms Senescall said.

"I financially will not recover from this."

When the Premier was asked if she would push for leniency for these pubs, Ms Palaszczuk's office simply stated that she doesn't issue infringement notices.

"This is a police matter for their consideration without political involvement," Ms Palaszczuk's spokesman said.

"Neither the Premier nor any minister issue infringement notices relating to any activity."

Tony Harris, publican of the Injune Hotel said that's a "very disappointing response".

"She can't palm it off and say it's not a political matter.

"Was the Brisbane protests a political matter?"

Ms Frecklington said Queenslanders have made enormous sacrifices and they want to see the rules applied equally and consistently.

"We have seen protests and poor enforcement of the rules cause a second wave in Victoria," she said.

"The lives and livelihoods of Queenslanders are too important to be put a risk by a government that isn't enforcing the rules.

"This only works if one set of rules is equally applied for everyone."
