New study proves Aboriginal people were first Australians

SCIENTISTS have confirmed Australia's first inhabitants were Aboriginal.

Their evidence disproves an earlier study that claimed DNA showed Europeans were Australia's first inhabitants.

Griffith University researchers used new DNA sequencing to re-analyse the remains of the oldest known Australian, Mungo Man.

They found genetic material attributed to the 40,000-year-old skeleton was the result of contamination after the body was found in 1974.

"The sample from Mungo Man which we retested contained sequences from five different European people, suggesting that these all represent contamination," Professor David Lambert said.

"With more advanced technology, we have found compelling support for the argument that Aboriginal Australians were the first inhabitants of Australia."
