New mum gets crafty for all breastfeeding mothers

KRISTEN Kachel was inspired to start her own necklace line for mums when she became one herself.

She named it after her son, Landon,

"I found he was getting too distracted when I was breastfeeding," she said. "They get to a certain age where they become more interested in what's going on around them.

"He also kept pulling on a nine carat gold necklace I had on at the time, and I was concerned he'd get injured."

That was the light-bulb moment for Mrs Kachel, who decided to develop a baby-friendly, non-toxic, playful accessory.

The interest soon generated among close friends and family pushed her to expand her idea - and a business, Landon Calling, was born.

"I wanted to offer something that was budget- friendly for new mums and stay-at-home mums... a lot of families go down to a single income and spending money on themselves, when you become a new mum, is not a high priority any more," she said.

Mrs Kachel also makes garlands and mobiles, which can take anywhere from 30 minutes to four hours to construct.

"You still want to accessorise when you're going to weddings, race days and barbecues... and that's what my product is for," Mrs Kachel said.

"While I'm no longer breastfeeding, I still wear my own necklaces when I go out, and Landon still grabs onto them when I pick him up... I also have a garland in the car and his highchair."
