New fishing club a catch with families

IT MIGHT have just two official events under its belt, but already the Miles and Condamine Fishing Club is kicking goals this year.

As the brainchild of Miles 4x4 & Outdoors owner and passionate fisherman Peter Delaforce, the lifestyle club's main aims were simply to entice people to stay in town on weekends.

"I thought there may be an opportunity to bring my passion to work and introduce a wide range of fishing gear, and after a few beers with mates I formed the Miles Condamine fishing club,” Mr Delaforce said.

Last weekend's competition at Caliguel Lagoon proved a hit with competitive anglers, as well as the younger generation.

"Miles really needed something for families and kids to do on weekends,” Mr Delaforce said.

"Getting kids involved in a club that provides outdoor activities and weekends away will hopefully entice family and friends to stay in Miles for these events, which will generate income to local business,” he said.

The weekend club event was its second activity after the wildly successful Australia Day Cray Catch, with competitors attending from across the Surat Basin region as well as further afield from Rockhampton, Bundaberg and Brisbane.

"This is the best thing that has ever happened in town. I finally get a chance to take my kids somewhere different and see them enjoying themselves,” Miles Swagsman Motel owner Robert Hinds said.

"Nothing has been done like this before and to see the emotion on parents watching the kids being outdoors and joining in really stood out,” Mr Delaforce said.

The monthly local fishing days accrue points towards end-of-year champion trophies.

Blake Steinberg is on top of the junior leaderboard with 16.6 points and Kristy Ward is in the lead of the senior division with 24.75 points.

The next Miles club event is coming up on Saturday, March 16, and the Western Downs Cod Classic in July will involve the greater Downs region.

The club is open to everyone from every region. Information about upcoming events is on the Miles and Condamine Fishing Club Inc. Facebook page.
