Man charged with murder over neighbour's death

POLICE arrested a 60-year-old man in East Lismore on Friday afternoon after an alleged fight with his next-door neighbour turned deadly.

Emergency services were called to College Street shortly before 5pm where they helped an unconscious 55-year-old man, David Marriott, who later died at Lismore Base Hospital.

Police made the arrest at the scene of the crime and the alleged murderer was refused bail.

He was due to appear before the Lismore Bail Court on Saturday morning but a police spokesman said the closed court appearance was postponed until Sunday morning pending "medical clearances".

Chief Inspector Nicole Bruce said Mr Marriott suffered facial injuries and cuts but no weapons were involved in the fight and the exact cause of death was unknown.

She said police had spoken to some witnesses but were appealing for more.

Jason Conroy, a neighbour, said had known Mr Marriott for two years as a man who was "very quiet" and who "mind[ed] his own business".

Neighbours said both men lived alone and neither one had children but expressed concern for Mr Marriott's mother, a woman in her eighties who depended on daily care from Mr Marriott.
