Mum of baby with whooping cough: 'please share to educate'

"THIS video may distress some people but I'm sharing to show just how scary and dangerous whooping cough is..."

A mother of a five-week-old baby has shared video of her daughter choking during a whooping cough episode.

Sydney mum-of-two, Sandra Tee posted the footage on her Facebook page in a bid to "educate more people on the importance of vaccinations".

Too young to be vaccinated, Ms Tee said babies relied on others being immunised.

"Babies rely on herd immunity to keep them safe and unfortunately we cannot achieve that without high vaccination rates," she wrote in the post.

In the video her infant daughter Heidi chokes and stops breathing. But she said it is the 'silent episodes' that are the most dangerous.

"The head pediatrician wanted us to film it to show people how the cough isn't always the worst/major symptom in babies.

"Whooping cough is not always a loud obvious cough.

"The scary symptom for babies is when they don't cough but silently choke and turn blue/purple from lack of oxygen," she wrote.

She said she and her husband have been taking turns watching their baby 24/7 and if they hadn't the "outcome would have been fatal".

"It's the silent episodes which mean we are watching her 24/7 and very tired!

"Lucky my husband is amazing and we have been taking shifts," she wrote.

Ms Tee is begging others not to ignore the warning signs.

"Our baby girl only had a slight cough to start.

"I'm sharing [this video] to show just how scary and dangerous whooping cough is to babies who are too young to be vaccinated.

"Please share this to educate more people on the importance of vaccinations," she wrote.

The video has now been shared more than 6000 times since it was posted on Monday night.

Ms Tee isn't the first mother to share distressing footage of a baby struggling with whooping cough.

In April, a Gold Coast mother who said she caught whooping cough and passed it on to her newborn daughter because she refused the vaccine during pregnancy went public in a video posted on the Gold Coast Health Facebook page to warn others.

In the video, the woman known as Cormit said she refused the vaccine in the last trimester because she was a healthy "organic" kind of woman.

"I was offered the injection in week 28, being the healthy, fit organic woman that I am I said 'leave me alone', I said 'I don't need this crap'."

But she said if she could have turned back time, she would have protected herself because after giving birth to her daughter Eva, Cormit saw a doctor after she'd been coughing for a few days and found out she had whooping cough.

And she had passed it on to her baby daughter.
