Motivational techniques to boost Balonne

THE health of the community was the focal point of the B.strong Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Brief Intervention Training Program that was held in St George on Tuesday.

The program, which was run by the Menzies School of Health in conjunction with Queensland Health, helped to equip community leaders and healthcare staff with information about smoking cessation and the benefit of a healthy diet and physical activity.

Professionals from across the west attended the seminar, some travelling from as far as Goondiwindi.

"It's all around motivational interviewing, and recognising what stage of change a person is at,” instructor Grace Ward said.

"Our main aim is improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.

"With these skills the facilitators are a little bit better equipped to help their clients through asking better questions.”
