Massive 6.7 magnitude quake strikes north of Australia

A MASSIVE quake with a 6.7 magnitude has shaken an island region north of Australia with enough force that it could likely be felt more than 750km away.

The quake struck the New Ireland region of PNG, north west of Port Moresby, at a depth of 436km.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center based in Hawaii released a message in its alert stating that a "destructive Pacific-wide tsunami was not expected".

"There is no tsunami threat to Hawaii."

The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre has also not issued a threat for the Australian coastline.
