Maranoa MP Bruce Scott announces retirement

VETERAN Maranoa MP and deputy speaker Bruce Scott will not contest the next Federal Election.

In a statement, the 71-year-old National Party stalwart said he valued the ongoing support of his constituency since he was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1990.

"I have proudly taken the fight of my constituents to the floor of the Federal Parliament, representing them in times of great triumph and despair," Mr Scott said.

"I have fought hard for better agricultural, health and education outcomes and to improve the local telecommunications and transport networks across the electorate.

"I value the friendship shown to me by my State and Federal colleagues and appreciate the support of my constituency."

Following his retirement from Federal Parliament at the next election, due to be held in the second half of 2016, Mr Scott will take time to pursue other interests and spend time with family.

Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss praised his friend and colleague for his commitment to regional Australia.

"There have been few more persistent and strident advocates in the parliament than Bruce Scott and few more faithful representatives of people in regional Australia," he said.

"Bruce has been a faithful and tireless servant of people, in particular the people of Maranoa."

Mr Scott said he would continue his various parliamentary commitments, including the deputy speaker role, until his retirement.
